strange valleys, the 2018 full-length from starving daughters, is a progression as well as a shift in sound from the la band s already-stellar previous releases. make no doubt about it that the sound of progressive rock and psychedelia still play a big role here but there s certainly a greater influence from library music on the new lp. the starving daughters vinyl impressions blog, led by chris tillotson of the band, shared the music of chris s collection of which many were library lp s. these records seemed to have seeped into the mind, body, and souls of the whole band on this strange valleys lp. everything from the instrumentation, the attention to melody, to the track-length shows the large appreciation they have for library music. that being said, this moog-heavy, psychedelic-prog-funk, california-themed record is certainly unique and adventurous. winding through the exotic roads of strange valleys is certainly a trip well worth taking over and over again.

for her first single, the sublime title loverboy comes out as a big urban spleen, released in a space made of asphalt and artificial paradises. groups like hooverphonic or even portishead play around this throbbing softness that is loverboy, splashing about in the electronic lounge of the 90s. the opener, alien lady features a flute-driven solo backed up by a funky guitar riff that then transitions into a tropical beat and tanja narrating the story of feeling a stranger in a big city, not understanding the social codes and clues ‘i don t speak the language in the way that you know’ while worth to you is a dreamy, glitched-out hypnotic track which maintains an edge of mysterious sexuality and her signature sense of intimate detachment. if the atmosphere coming out of lomboy’s work can be sometimes felt as prude and even shy, it certainly does not intend to hide with embarrassment the aphrodisiac scent that permeates it. on the contrary, this modesty perceived in the interpretation and in the production sensually envelops the different compositions, and imparts to this guilty pleasure the feeling of a stolen kiss. warped caress brings us to vertiginous heights and takes us into abyssal depths throughout the five tracks. this suggests at times a diegetic representation of this erotic world seen through the insolent prose and at other times a mimetic representation where each instrument plays an important part in every story told.

the second outing from yaleesa hall in this two-piece ep series on will & ink. the 13th release on the label packs a visceral punch across four fresh tracks that are perfect for dance floor deployment. first track daisy wright kicks off with minimal but impactful drum rhythms that eventually get cut up with tumbling sirens, hammering hits and blasts of dirty noise. it s hugely physical stuff, while follow up barbara adams is more stripped back and mysterious. icy hi hats tick, howling synths sound bring a sadness and the depth of stern field as sounds play out above, below and all around you is truly standout. harriet brown then sinks into a deeper electro groove with spangled bass, before a vip mix then slows things down to a dread fuelled dub wise swagger that eventually breaks out into oscillating, stuttering rave madness. it makes for one hell of a thrilling ride and kicks off a promising year for both yaleesa hall and the will & ink label.

inside out is a brand new series that invites djs and producers to blur the boundaries between traditional artist albums and mix compilations. coming from aus music label head and dj-kicks curator will saul, the concept encourages artists to showcase their own music and or the music of those in their own individual circles. the mix will be release digitally and on cd, while a selection of the tracks will also be available on double gatefold vinyl. each instalment will feature 100% new and unreleased music. it is a chance for artists to take sole creative charge, a&r as they see fit and then commission brand new music specifically for the cause. depending on who is at the helm, inside out will take different forms: producers may wish to represent their own sound with only music they have made themselves or with close collaborators, while djs and label heads may wish to reflect the sounds and scenes that surround them. the results will be a window into an artists world that works as a coherent mix, but also as a treasure trove of fresh new music that steps outside the usual lines of a dance album. the idea stems from will sauls own approach in the club, which often finds him seeking out brand new and unheard music to play for the first time. that feeling of taking people into the unknown is one that reminds him of the energy and excitement of his early days as a dancer.

norwegian duo smerz had a prolific 2017, which saw the copenhagen-based henriette and catharina play the likes of club 2 club, moma ps1, sell out half life parties of their own, as well as release five new tracks along with five self-directed videos. clearly not ones to wait around, smerz go in to the new year with their have fun ep on the horizon for release via xl recordings in march 2018. with their unique electronic sound blending deconstructed club music, minimalist r&b and experimental pop and techno, smerz are also prolific djs who s djing style takes a similar route. mixing live vocals over their own music and interlaced with choice cuts aimed squarely at the dancefloor, this duo dj hard in a live setting and are thrilling to watch as well as listen. smerz currently host their own monthly nts radio residency, mixing cutting-edge dance music and darker tones, in what is turning in to their trademark style.

weekend loving from jennifer lara is a perfect blend of boogie funk, roots reggae and lovers rock. produced by black solidarity records in 1985, this album is a masterpiece from the studio one princess. recorded at tuff gong and music mountain studios in jamaica, the rhythm tracks are played by some of the best musicians from the island in the sun: lincoln style scott (drum), errol flabba holt (bass), robbye lyn (piano & synthetiser), dean frazer & ronald nambo robinson (horns). this reissue was carefully remastered from black solidarity master tape, now presented as a double lp 45 rpm dj friendly edition. the original limonious artwork was reloaded and a bonus track was added to complete the set: ’in my time’, an obscure slow synth groove, full of hope and melancholy. jennifer lara was first taken to studio one in 1969 by keyboardist richard ace, who was a session musician. she never left the studio one family and became resident harmonist. she added backing vocals to the songs of some of the camp’s biggest names, including delroy wilson, freddie mcgregor, dennis brown and sugar minott. in 1974, jennifer lara recorded her debut album with coxsone dodd at studio one in brentford road. the results of the sessions appeared on studio one presents jennifer lara, which was an instant success. jennifer lara was one of clement coxsone dodds protégés. one year after coxsone passed, she died at the kingston public hospital. she is survived by two children, daughter ika and son cheka. jennifer lara was a very likeable person, got on with everyone. she was involved in many benefit concerts to help to poor and the needy in jamaica. may your soul rest in peace, we love you jennifer.

seven years ago, unbalance created his own label as a base for his musical ideas, a platform to play around with the conception of what -techno- is and would be alongside his own creative progression. come to present day and the label is now at its ninth release, reaching a point where the line of accumulated experiences must be drawn in the sand — and the experiences of previous projects and releases lead to venerable conclusion. enter ten, an album of internalized strife that was created during a period of big changes in the artist s life. between enduring personal experiences, his creative output veering between his straightforward club eccentricities and subdural sensibilities, unbalance cultivates a symbiotic link between sounds played and sounds portrayed — whilst paying tribute to the essence of groove, vibration and the hypnotic unknown that exists to balance the scales. this album will be the final point in the label s journey into the depths of multifaceted techno music.

drums of passion was the first album released by babatunde olatunji (1927-2003) in 1960. olatunji was a drummer, social activist and musician, born in ajindo, nigeria. in this album he has recaptured some of his early impressions in his drum beats and giving them new zest. the african drum rhythms are not only musical melodies and songs but also ways of communication. for instance, the first track -akiwowo- was the name of a train conductor who shouted his humorous cry against the fading rhythm of the freight train. -baba jinde- is a dance play and the title track -gin-go-lo-ba- was sampled by many contemporary artists (santana and fatboy slim amongst others) and covered in 1979 by latin jazz/percussionist candido for his disco chart smash -jingo-. drums of passion is mainly a danceable album and often cited as one of the first african albums recorded in (then called) stereophonic sound in the united states in 1960. pressing on 180 gram audiophile vinyl.

more quality from kenny dope, here in his soul fuzion guise. >i got rhythm< leads with the kickdrum (think >iko iko< given a house touch) and then a soulful vocal from vee drifts over the top, while lush chords and a subtle bassline complete this late night groover. on the flip, the >ritual mix< fattens out the bass and kickdrum, and lets the vocal drift more into the back ground, letting newly added percussion come more into play on a slightly tougher take than the original.

hobor is part of many groups and formations himself, such as songs for pneumonia or cointel allstars and the event-series fiktion+masse. his solo project is mainly known for extended dj-sets on various ambient-floors in leipzig and his live-sets - which could be described as cautious investigations into micro-sounds - are mainly based on his work with modular synthesizers. his debut-album on ph17 is a minimalistic, conceptual work that focuses on sound as much as on the way electronic music usually plays. all tracks consist of almost independent layers of sound that behave like improvising musicians. they seem to play together but by focusing on one of them you soon realise they’re actually stoically sticking to there own rhythm and repetition and as the tracks play on these layers of sound start to form ever different constellations. no wonder hobor says he took inspiration from improvising bands like the necks. his album is as fascinating and hypnotizing as one of their live-jams. “constellations is released on 50 limited tapes.

frank is the latest release from dolfin records, a texas indie label with a prominent underground roster that includes rapper lord byron, producer ben hixon, r&b singer jon bap, and former stanley clarke drummer mike mitchell. liv.e is one of the newer artists on the label, having previously collaborated with hixon through a series of dj parties in dallas (“new math mondays”). hixon and bap have significant marks on this project, providing production, mixing, and background vocals. the beats they lend are often heavy on the drums, with short, hazy riffs that resemble dilla-style syncopated loops. frank opens with a short hiss, launching into a jittery pattern of cymbals and drums, stinging bass slaps, and bouncy guitar riffs. you can almost see the tape reels rolling in front of you as the instrumental loops play themselves out with occasional flutters and skips. a chorus of voices enter with harmonies out of the george clinton songbook, blending in behind the slow, finger-snapping beat. it sounds more like a lost, dusty funk recording from the ’70s than an r&b song made in 2017. -nitish pahwa (passion of the weiss)

a great four tracker of old school 90’s sounding deep house from french producer frederic boeuf aka concept e25. his passion for electronic music was ignited in the early 90’s when he discovered labels such as f communications and fnac. since then he has continually been developing his sound and exploring new and diverse ways of making music. frederic boeuf aka concept e25 has released most of his music on the classic label skylax. this his first release on swedish brandy productions. don’t sleep on this one. play it and get rewarded!

mit hitsingles wie -get a life-, -back home- und -sky and sand- (mit seinem bruder paul) hat fritz kalkbrenner in den letzten jahren unser modernes verständnis von elektronischer musik mitgeprägt. nach vier erfolgreichen alben, von denen die letzten beiden die top 10 der deutschen albumcharts erreichten, wendet er seinen musikalischen blick in eine andere richtung. es geht hier um elektronische musik, wie sie fritz kalkbrenner in seiner jugendlichen sozialisierung in den bis heute legendären techno- und houseclubs der hauptstadt in den neunziger jahren kennengelernt hat. die zäsur, des weglassens der so vertraut gewordenen bariton stimme öffnet die tür in die weite welt elektronischer musik, die sowohl für das homelistening, als auch für den clubeinsatz taugt. es gibt auf diesen 12 tracks keine konventionen und manchmal auch kein halten mehr, fritz kalkbrenner lässt sich gehen in der faszination für dub techno, für klare dominante housestrukturen oder auch in feinen hymnischen melodien die aus so manchem titel des neuen albums herausscheinen.

the people at antinote are always excited to introduce new names to its roster and sign libra, its latest addition, makes no exception to the rule. released under the moniker sign libra, closer to the equator is the work of latvian artist and composer agata melnikova. composed for a contemporary ballet at latvian national opera in riga, the music on this record strongly relies on melnikovas appreciation of bbc-produced nature documentaries. projecting the life of each creature that inhabits the british tv-program into her very personal and highly synthetized world, sign libra lends these microscopic beings her own voice. each song works like a musical tableau in which the main protagonists plants and animals come on stage to play their part in a ballet carefully choreographed by the latvian artist.

from the knowledge gained on our expeditions, we are able to track down the jets fired during each unique eruption and share them with the people of this majestic orb.
the first squirt led us to the yard in hackney, where ross from friends performed live for one of the first few times in his already sparkling career.
>from the performance came a track called ‘champagne’, a wave of sax washing over you accompanied by plinking guitar and of course those fuzzy hi hats that go right to your head.
this track could previously only be experienced by seeing the trio play live or by watching our documentation of the performance, until now.

after playing lovestar to death we reached out to see if sebastien was still feeling in an emotional mood. we discovered quickly that, in fact, this is where his creative heart lives and breathes. the two tracks featured here were conjured up (in a daydream we like to believe) in time to play out at all the summer closing events in the usa and on be tvs coverage at the bpm festival and our south american tour. already loved. already track id d and already to create more magical moments. enjoy!

five dazzling remixes of population one s classic hippnotic culture lp by the detroit minimalist himself. kicking off with a 20th anniversary mix of rush hour, the track that inspired our company name! big big tip and a great honor.play it loud!objekt: these are wonderful. no surprise though- population one, also known as terrence dixon, offered a first remix of his mysterious, minimal detroit track rush hour for the celebration of the label s 10th anniversary and now blesses us with new takes on five hippnotic culture album tracks. the impressive hippnotic culture lp was originally released in 1995 on the long defunct utensil label, which was run by claude young.

after releases by cez and ashac, high ends returns with an ep by thomas romain and his mother, famed free jazz pianist christine wodrascka. christine’s style is wholly unique: there are no barriers for her sonic exploration. sound matter, energy, forms, architecture and emotion all play a part in shaping the style of one the most unique musicians out there. with influences such as cecile taylor, terry riley or thelonious monk, no two wodrascka performances are the same. in his own irregular style, thomas adds a sense of swing to his mother’s improvisations. this fusion of acoustic and electronic creates wholly original experimental journeys which will delight the auditory senses of those listening.

a voice in the ether. a calm, clement drone. a gentle, pulsing throb. like the ghost of a forgotten future as imagined by the distant past, certain creatures sophomore lp nasadiya sukta is a study in timelessness - crystalline, heartfelt ambient music designed to push light through shadow. nasadiya sukta is the debut release on mysteries of the deep, a record label dedicated to total sensory immersion. mysteries (as its known colloquially and affectionately) launched in 2011 after a particularly fruitful late-night mixing session, first as a cult podcast series dedicated to narcotic music of all kinds, subsequently expanding into a series of seasonal events. now, with the release of nasadiya sukta, mysteries of the deep becomes a full-fledged outlet for music to play in the dark. certain creatures is the alias of brooklyn-based artist oliver chapoy, and nasadiya sukta was crafted especially for mysteries of the deep. its genesis came when grant aaron, mysteries proprietor, tapped chapoy to perform at mysteries halloween event in 2015. his performance was the nights axis point, bridging earlier subdued sounds with late-night upbeat moods. two years later, reworked and reconfigured, this performance is reborn as nasadiya sukta. although divided into six tracks, nasadiya coheres into a single extra-terrestrial mass, its beautiful understated elegance encouraging repeat listens. simultaneously harking back to ambient classics from the 90s (you know who they are) while cementing chapoy as a visionary artist with his own unique voice, nasadiya sukta is one for the space travellers indeed.

rekids launch re-issue label entitled r-time records with four timeless tracks from sir lord comixx. having established a handful of renowned imprints such as rekids, pyramids of mars, cabin fever and the double r, matt edwards new venture aims to shine a light on classic tracks that didn t always get the recognition they deserve. amoon sir lord comixx and i go back a long way and we met through our friend justin isonoe in the early 90s,” says matt edwards. “i was still living in catford and would regularly drive over to justin s studio where he d play me all this crazy, otherworldly music from amoon and it blew my mind i was completely captivated by his unique take on techno. at the time i had no idea that we grew up in the same neighbourhood and amoon was living just around the corner so, of course, we hooked up and in 1996 i released an ep from him including one of his classics ur my omen on my hard up label.” composed of four tracks from separate releases, retroactive (part one) inaugurates with 1 4 the groove from sir lord comixx s danceteria ep on ugly music. produced in 96, the track s raw aesthetic features sharp percussion, heady melodies and a compelling groove. meanwhile, enemax - which appeared on 1a records demonstrates throbbing synths and shuffling drums. originally produced under his a.moon moniker in 98, funk box is the most robust track on the package with its thudding kicks and assortment of meandering sounds, before the azid jazz provides a deep and funky finale.
